How Tags Work

on wikidot

All pages once they are created are tagged (or should be tagged) by the users of that page with key words or terms that relate to the content of that page. For example, this page is tagged with 'pragmatics,' since it contains pragmatic information about how this wiki works. The tags used by this site are displayed as a tag cloud in the upper-right sidebar of the page. When you click on one of these terms, the wiki takes you to a list of pages tagged with that word. This is becomes very useful as the content of a site grows. It can assist in organization of information, as well as site navigation.

in general

The ability to tag pages is something to take into consideration when you are looking for a platform to host your course's wiki. It can simplify the grading process. As the students create pages for a specific assignment they can tag those pages with an assignment-specific keyword. When it is time for you to grade that work, you can click on that word in the tag cloud and see all of the pages that have been created for that assignment. It streamlines things.

For more information about this type of tagging, see the Wikipedia entry on Metadata Tags.
